Bailey Cadamarteri and his Jamaica team-mates missed out on automatic qualification to next year’s World Cup finals in a dramatic finish to their group decider against Curacao in the early hours of this morning (GMT).

They went into the match in Kingston knowing only a win would take them through against table-topping Curacao who just needed a draw to qualify.

The teams were still locked at 0-0 until added time when Jamaica were awarded a penalty for a ‘foul’ in the box, only for the decision to be overturned following VAR checks, and the opportunity for a possible spot kick winner, plus that automatic place in the World Cup finals, had disappeared.

Cadamarteri came on as a sub 12 minutes from time and saw an 87th minute header come back off the post.

Jamaica, whose head coach Steve McClaren quit after the Curacao result, still have a second chance to reach the World Cup finals but face a mini-tournament of six teams in Mexico and with the winner then playing against either DR Congo or Iraq.
