Wednesday have announced that the current contracts of Michael Smith and Josh Windass have been terminated by mutual consent and with immediate effect.

It means we have lost four strikers in less than a week following the earlier departures of Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama.

Both Smith and Windass have been key members of our squad in recent seasons, making more than 300 appearances between them and posting 86 goals.

This latest news comes amidst previous  reports that negotiations over a projected club takeover appear to have stalled.

Meanwhile, Wednesday also face the possibility of the North Stand being closed for the start of the new season on safety grounds.

A BBC report says Wednesday have been told to carry out repair works after “extensive corrosion” was found in the roof of the stand.

Minutes from a meeting of Sheffield City Council’s safety advisory group last month apparently warn that the authority will not be able to approve the continuance of the existing general safety certificate until the works are completed.

A spokesperson for Wednesday said at the time that the club was committed to beginning the work immediately.

A further Safety Advisory Group meeting is scheduled for tomorrow (Friday).
