Wednesday’s search for a first home league win this season continues after being pegged back to 1-1 at home to Norwich this evening.
With a 28,000-plus crowd packed into Hillsborough, we had the better of the first half and led 1-0 at the break but Norwich showed some improvement after the interval, grabbing an equaliser, and we missed further opportunities to pick up that elusive victory at S6.
Wednesday were fortunate not to be behind inside the first minute when Dominic Iorfa lost possession, Josh Sargent seized on the loose ball and looked sure to score past the advancing Ethan Horvath but steered his effort wide.
Three minutes later we were in front – and in some style – when Barry Bannan surged forward from midfield and unleashed a cracking 30-yard drive into the top corner of the Kop net.
The skipper went close again soon afterwards with an effort from the edge of the box, bringing a diving save out of keeper Vladan Kovacevic.
Sean Fusire shot wide as we continued to boss the opening stages and then Jamal Lowe missed a great chance to double our lead just before the half-hour mark, heading over a cracking Harry Amass cross when unmarked six yards out.
The openings continued to come our way after half time with Ike Ugbo sending Svante Ingelsson clear into the box but his angled effort lacked conviction and was saved by Kovacevic.
Norwich threatened through Oscar Schwartau but his effort was off target and the result was then arguably decided by two efforts at either end of the pitch on the hour.
First, Jamal Lowe missed another great chance when Ingelsson’s low cross found him at the far post but the striker sliced wide from close range.
To make matters worse, Norwich attacked almost immediately and levelled when Sargent found Mathias Kvistgaarden in front of goal and he slotted home from six yards.
The better chances still fell to Wednesday with Kovacevic saving from Fusire and then Ingelsson ‘s effort from the halfway line was off-target with the Norwich keeper stranded out of goal.
Bailey Cadamarteri was next to test Kovacevic with a strong snapshot but Norwich almost snatched an added time winner when Horvath made a fine stop to keep out Kvistgaarden’s header.
The draw leaves us still marooned at the bottom on minus four points and 17 points from safety.
