Wednesday’s battling performance at Birmingham on Tuesday evening ended in last-gasp despair as the home side snatched a late, late equaliser in a 2-2 draw.

Yes we rode our luck at times, yes they dominated possession and had 20 shots to our five but we came from behind to lead 2-1 and with the added time of eight minutes already up us Wednesdayites were just praying for that final whistle.

However, when we failed to clear another Birmingham attack in the 99th minute, Demarai Gray pounced to fire home from 12 yards and via the underside of the bar to leave us with just the draw.

Three points would have taken us out of the relegation zone but we still ended up moving up one place to 22nd and now sit on six points.

Wednesday fell behind after just nine minutes when Harry Amass lost out in a tackle with Jay Stansfield in the penalty box, leaving the striker free to half-volley smartly past Ethan Horvath.

Wednesday had caused few problems before we levelled on 37 minutes, Jamal Lowe taking advantage of a slip by defender Eiran Cashin and then seeing Ryan Allsop let Lowe’s ensuing shot go through the keeper’s dive and into the net.

Stansfield went close to restoring the home side’s lead just before the break and then forced a diving save out of Horvath with a low 20-yarder soon after the restart.

However, it was Wednesday who went in front 14 minutes from time. Barry Bannan produced another super diagonal free kick to the far post and youngster George Brown coolly cushioned the ball back across goal and into the far corner of the net from six yards.

There was no denying the home side dominated proceedings, the pressure getting greater on Wednesday in the closing minutes, and then, as the game moved into the 99th minute, the equaliser finally came from Gray.
