Wednesday’s match at Blackburn Rovers this afternoon was abandoned because of a waterlogged pitch, with the Owls trailing 1-0.

After non-stop rain in the first half and no sign of the conditions abaiting, it became clear soon after half-time that the game might be in danger of not finishing, with the ball failing to travel properly on various parts of the pitch.

Referee Ruebyn Ricardo suspended play on 59 minutes to allow groundstaff to use machinery to try to soak up the on-going downpours but, with conditions failing to improve after another 10 minutes, he was left with no alternative but to abandon the game.

As for the earlier action, there was very little to report with the first half producing just one effort on target. That was the Blackburn goal on 33 minutes when Yukon Ohashi was left unmarked six yards out to turn home a low cross from Ryoya Morishita.

However, Wednesday missed a great chance to equalise soon after the restart.

Bailey Cadamarteri broke clear but shot too close to Aynsley Pears, allowing the keeper to save with his legs, and the striker really should have squared the ball across to the unmarked Jamal Lowe who looked sure to score.

It all counted for nothing with the game called off a few minutes later and for Blackburn it is the second time a match has been abandoned due to waterlogging at Ewood Park this season. They led Ipswich 1-0 back in September but the action was halted after 79 minutes and when the teams replayed the fixture on Tuesday evening it finished 1-1, Ipswich scoring a 95th minute equaliser.

We now wait to hear of a new date for our rearranged fixture with Rovers.
