Wednesday’s search for a first league win since September continues after a 3-0 lunchtime defeat at QPR.

Two late goals from the home side gave a slightly flattering look to the scoreline for them in a match that could politely be described as ‘not a great advertisement for the Championship’ and played in difficult freezing conditions.

With defender Liam Cooper ruled out with his groin problem, we began the match with just three ‘senior’ players in the starting line-up and our lack of first-team experience was reflected in a poor first-half showing against a Rangers side who were far from convincing themselves.

They should have taken the lead after just eight minutes when Pierce Charles got down well to push away a low drive from Richard Kone and Rumarn Bushell fired the rebound over the bar.

However, Burrell made no mistake six minutes later when he was not picked up as he ran onto a through ball into the box and shot past Charles at his near post.

Wednesday failed to show enough competitiveness in the first half, also failing to have an effort on target, while Rangers would have gone in at the break disappointed not to have added to their single goal.

However, we looked sharper and more up for the fight in the second half and Harry Amass fired a swerving effort just off-target before Charlie McNeill’s a low 20-yarder was easily saved by ex-Owl Ben Hamer in the QPR goal.

Minutes later, Jamal Lowe found space on the right but his low cross was too close to Hamer with Bailey Cadamarteri unmarked six yards out.

And hopes of a Wednesday fightback were all but ended nine minutes from time when Rayan Kolli found space down the right and his fierce shot from the edge of the box flew past Charles.

Severn minutes later it was 3-0 when Nathan Redmond’s miscued crossfield clearance found the head of QPR’s Kieran Morgan and he set up Kolli to hammer home his second of the day.

Cole McGhee curled an effort just wide in added time but it was another defeat for Wednesday, with Henrik Pedersen now hoping that he will get permission get a loan signing or two during the January transfer window to bring much-needed experience and fresh legs to the squad.
