Unfortunately, due to our website crashing at the end of last week, we were unable to bring you the usual matchday coverage for our season finale against West Brom on Saturday but, thanks to the hard work of member Chris Grant, the site is now back up and running and here are a few reflections on the match and the season as a whole for the London Owls.
Sometimes, not very often, you get a day watching Wednesday when just about everything goes perfectly and … that was last Saturday.
After a season of setback following setback off the pitch and defeat after defeat on the field, nine months later Hillsborough was staging its final game of the miserable campaign to see if we could also register a first home league win.
However, in true Wednesday style this was to be a celebratory occasion, billed as ‘Honolulu Wednesday’ day and with a remarkable sellout near-34,000 crowd, the largest seen anywhere in the Championship this season, there to witness the end of the season, along with the arrival of our new owners, led by David Storch.
And his pre-match announcement that the proposed 15-point deduction for the start of next season had been overturned brought the biggest roar of the day.
As for the game itself, played out in front of a raucous Hillsborough, we were all rewarded with that first home league win of the campaign in a 2-1 victory.
Yes, it truly was a day to remember after nine months to forget.
And looking briefly back at the 2025-26 season, the London Owls can take more than a little satisfaction from another day to remember back in September when we played our part in the efforts to get owner Dejphon Chansiri out of our club.
Our organised protests outside the Thai Embassy, with more than 150 of us voicing our concerns in the capital and backed by members of the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust, saw the London Owls taking the opportunity to have a big say over the situation.
It helped bring national media coverage to our club but that wasn’t the reason for the protests, they were to highlight what was happening at S6, the danger to the future of our wonderful club … and we certainly did that.
As a bonus, yes it also heightened our profile which, in turn, led to an increase in club membership and helped further cement relationships with other groups.
Those involved in organising such a day deserve a massive ‘well done’, along with all our members who played such an important part in the protest.
It’s also big gratitude to those who have spent another season ensuring the London Owls continue to function so well.
Whether it’s organising travel to matches, securing tickets for away games, taking charge of ensuring we have teams for regular pool, darts and quiz evenings, along with other social events, thank you so much for playing vital roles in the running of the club.
Looking ahead to next season, it’s another campaign back in division one but, with new ownership and no 15-point deduction, we look to the future with renewed hope of an instant return to the Championship … and the fixtures are out on June 25!
Thanks again to you all for your continued membership and support and enjoy the summer break. WAWAW!!
