A second-half Wrexham goal saw Wednesday’s woes continue at Hillsborough this afternoon.
In a match sadly reminiscent of so many others at S6 this season, we held the opposition for the first half but their territorial advantage finally brought the rewards … and a 23rd game without a win for the Owls.
Wrexham had an early opening when Issa Kabore saw his effort saved by Murphy Cooper but we hit back with a clear chance on nine minutes.
Jamal Lowe sent loanee debutant Jerry Yates through on goal but, under pressure from an incoming challenge, his shot went just wide.
That was the biggest threat from Wednesday in the first half with Wrexham twice going close to an opener.
The unmarked Nathan Broadhead failed to connect properly with a close-range headed chance on the half-hour mark and just before the break Ben Sheaf’s lob from inside the box went over Cooper but also just cleared the Kop bar.
However, Wrexham did get their goal on 57 minutes when Kabore latched onto a ball played inside Reece Johnson and the winger’s low cross was turned home at the far post by Sam Smith.
Smith was close to adding a second just minutes later when he found time and space in the box but Cooper turned away his snapshot.
Then, with 75 minutes on the clock, came our first shot on target when Lowe’s through ball found Bailey Cadamarteri and his strong shot from 12 yards was pushed away by keeper Arthur Okonkwo.
We went even closer when the resulting Svante Ingelsson corner found Lowe, beyond the far post, his low angled effort beating Okonko, only to see Matty James clear off the line to deny Wednesday an equaliser … and our first goal since Boxing Day.
Added to that, we find ourselves still searching for a first home league win of the season as the fixture list enters February.
