Wednesday’s interest in the Carabao Cup ended in a 2-0 second round defeat to Championship side Wolves at Hillsborough this evening.

As usual, both sides made several changes from their league lie-ups at the weekend and Wolves, relegated from the top flight last season, proved too strong for a Wednesday team who never looked like springing a surprise.

We fell behind after just three minutes when Liam Palmer failed to deal with a crossfield pass, Tawanda Chirewa cut inside and when Joe Lumley parried his shot the ball rebounded off Sil Swinkels and into the Kop net.

Will Grainger curled over the bar from outside the box before Wolves keeper Jose Sa saved comfortably from Harry Gray’s 20-yard free kick while Liverpool loanee Kieran Morrison also showed some encouraging touches but Wolves looked a cut above the Owls and they doubled their lead on 46 minutes.

Ricardo Santos missed Tommy Doyle’s cross and the unmarked Saheed Olagunju easily headed home from close range.

Any hope of a second-half Wednesday fightback never materialised while Wolves looked comfortable and happy to play out the tie without stretching themselves.

The introduction of Barry Bannan halfway through the second period brought much-needed energy and vision to our play and his through ball to Louie Barry saw the winger drift in from the left before firing past the far post.

However, that was a rare threat on the night and our thoughts now turn to the home game with Bromley on Saturday and the need to get back to winning ways after two Hillsborough defeats in quick succession.
