A quality finish from substitute Jamal Lowe sent Wednesday into the second round of the Carabao Cup with a 1-0 win over ten-man Bolton at Hillsborough this afternoon.

The goal came in the 70th minute when Barry Bannan’s classic through ball sent Lowe clear and he calmly lobbed over keeper Jack Bonham and into the far corner of the Kop net from just inside the box.

By that time Bolton had been reduced to 10 men, Xavier Simons being sent off on 55 minutes when he reacted to being pulled back by Harry Gray, punching the Wednesday man in the stomach and receiving a straight red card.

Wednesday had seven summer signings in their line-up and it was Bolton who looked the more likely side to take the lead in the early stages.

We were exposed at the back after seven minutes but thankfully Sam Dalby turned the ball wide from close in.

Ruben Rodrigues was off target from eight yards soon afterwards before our first threat, a low long-ranger from Callum Slattery just past the post.

Rodrigues wasted another clear opening for Bolton when he headed over from eight yards and Wednesday failed to get an effort on target in the first half, Jordi Liongola cutting in from the left but curling wide of the far post after good link-up play with Gray.

We began the second half in more promising fashion, Max Lowe unable to get a good contact on Mason Burstow’s far post cross and Gray saw an effort blocked for a corner after Bannan opened up the Bolton defence down the left.

Then came that red-card moment for Simons 10 minutes after the restart and Wednesday continued to look the more dangerous side.

Soon after the hour, Burstow set up Callum Slattery but his effort was just wide, before the deciding moment with that stylish Jamal Lowe winner, only seven minutes after he had come on.

Sil Swinkels went close to a second goal for the Owls, Bonham tipping away his close-range effort but Bolton rarely looked like staging a comeback and Wednesday now go forward to the second round draw which will be live on Sky Sports on Monday evening, at approximately 7.20pm.
