Reece James, one of the heroes of the ‘Miracle of Hillsborough’, has returned to Wednesday on a one-year contract.

James, who scored the third goal in our unforgettable play-off semi final second leg fightback against Peterborough at S6 in 2023, later moved on to Rotherham but is now back with the Owls.

The 33-year-old defender said today: “I didn’t think when I left two years ago that I’d be coming back here and being able to wear the shirt again, but obviously I’m absolutely delighted.

“From the first training session I had here, I was made to feel really welcome. The changing room is a really good changing room, a great group of lads.

“I’ve been promoted from League One three times, once with Wednesday, and you can try and give whatever wisdom and whatever help you can for the younger players. We all want to push each other as much as we can.”

Sporting Director, Simon Wilson, added: “We are delighted to welcome Reece back to Sheffield Wednesday. In addition to providing cover and balance for the squad, he is a fantastic player for the dressing room and the training pitch.

“Often these players are not the ones who get the limelight, but they play an essential role within the group. Reece has a deep feeling for the club from his past here and he is a perfect fit for what we need right now.”
