Wednesday’s goal drought and search for a win goes on after a 1-0 defeat at Blackburn tonight in what could politely be described as an extremely poor advert for the Championship.
Even allowing for our injury problems, having to field a clutch of youngsters and losing Bailey Cadamarteri to Wrexham yesterday, the Owls turned in a woeful first half performance which lacked energy, commitment and belief … all against a managerless Blackburn team clearly lacking in confidence after their poor run of late.
We did have an encouraging start to the second half and hit the bar but hopes of a revival soon disappeared as our winless run of Championship games moved on to the 24-mark, making it seven successive league defeats and without a goal since Boxing Day.
The home side were allowed to dominate the game from the off and it was no surprise when they took the lead on 12 minutes, Eiran Cashin turning the ball home from six yards after poor defending down our right-hand side allowed Ryoya Morishita to cross low into the box.
It could have been worse 10 minutes later when Murphy Cooper pushed a 20-yarder from Sondre Tronstad onto a post and then the keeper saved from Moussa Baradji.
Wednesday failed to muster an effort – either on or off target – in the opening 45 minutes but began the second half in more promising fashion.
A long throw from Svante Ingelsson was headed on at the near post and saved by Balazs Toth in the home goal but when Jamal Lowe nodded the rebound goalwards, Mathias Jorgensen was on the line to head the ball against the underside of the bar and to safety.
However, Wednesday’s attacking threat soon faded and with Blackburn posing few problems at the other end the game petered out into a hugely disappointing result for the 1700 travelling Wednesdayites.
